Nurses see no humor in ‘Count Stormula’ re-tweet by Detroit News

Good timing is a key to comedy and journalism. The Detroit News failed on both counts Tuesday morning, the Michigan Nurses Association says.

The medical group’s communication director, Dawn Kettinger, sent a complaint to prominent journalism blogger Jim Romenesko after The News’ social media team (@detnews) re-tweeted this crack by a young Ferndale woman:

BREAKING: Frankenstorm upgraded to Count Stormula. #sandy

“People are hungry for information and connection right now,” Kettinger says from Okemos, Mich., in a four-sentence e-mail the blogger posted in full. “Moments of misjudgment are understandable, but perhaps it is worth another discussion of how media use their resources and power.”

Separately, Kettinger tweeted from @minurses: “Would appreciate media being serious; people died.”

The original tweet came from Hailey Zureich (@zhailey) of Ferndale, community engagement coordinator for Detroit Public Television. She’s also an aspiring comedian at Go Comedy Improv Theater in her community.

Maybe the 2008 graduate of Oakland University is testing new material with that storm riff, which now gets national attention.
